Rustom Thanawalla, Chemical Engineer from IIT Mumbai (1971) and M.Engg from University of Florida (1973), has worked for the last 26 years in the field of Soaps and Oleochemicals, with companies like Tata Oil Mills, Hindustan Lever and VVF.
In HLL he designed and retrofitted a multitude of fatty acid process engineering technologies from multi column medium pressure, externally heated splitters to high pressure, direct injection Uni-towers. Was a key leader of a team responsible for increasing splitting and distillation capacity of existing plant by upto 3 times rated design capacity.
In VVF, he re-engineered an existing Lurgi splitter (limitation of emulsifying at max 8.5 tph operating capacity) to function continuously at an increased rate of 15 tph. Two other similar splitting plants were subsequently implemented in-house.
In 2010, designed in-house, a 750 tons / day CPKO feed splitter (32 tph). The plant presently operates at 675 tons / day (28 tph) with 99% DOS and HP Steam consumption around 110 kg / ton feed.
He has extensive expertise in fatty acid and alcohol fractionator design and operation, and has implemented revised upgraded operating conditions, to increase thru-put of fractionators by about 1.5 times design, with low slippage and optimum first cut yields.
Has been part of development of dry plough share mixer (PSM) saponification technology at HLL, has commissioned glycerine separation rotating disc contactor (RDC) and oil saponification technology, and is fully familiar with all standard fatty acid based saponification plants. Recently (November 2013) set right and operated at full capacity the latest semi dry (72 tfm neat soap) saponification Binacchi technology at Adani Wilmar, Bhuj. Rustom Thanawalla has used his academic qualification and unique industrial experience to create process simulators for both splitting and fractionation, used both in design, sizing of new plants, as well as up-gradation of existing operations. With these precise fully tested tools, he can speedily troubleshoot performance of entire Oleochemical facilities.
